Coding

What is computer coding?

A computer program is a set of instructions that a computer carries out.  Each instruction tells the computer to do a specific thing.  Coding is the process of writing the instructions that make up computer programs.  Programs include creating documents, watching movies, and playing video games.

Computers cannot understand instructions written in plain English.  Computer coders write programs in a way that computers can understand.  The language that coders use include words, numbers, and symbols to make up their instructions.

Two people we’ll be reading about soon:

Ada Lovelace was one of the world’s first programmers.  In 1843, she wrote instructions for a machine.

Grace Hopper was a computer programmer for the Navy.
